Lugnuts shut down South Bend, 3-0
LANSING, Mich. – Four Lansing Lugnuts (10-1) pitchers combined for a sweet 16 strikeouts in a six-hit 3-0 shutout of the South Bend Silver Hawks (5-6) on Monday evening at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The game was billed as a pitcher’s duel and it lived up to the expectations. Top prospect Noah Syndergaard started for Lansing and struck out six over three shutout innings before right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (Win, 1-0) fanned three in three innings of two-hit ball.
While Syndergaard and DeSclafani were mowing through the Silver Hawks lineup, Diamondbacks top prospect Archie Bradley tossed five no-hit innings while striking out a career-high eight batters.
Tyler Green (Loss, 0-1) relieved Bradley in the sixth and promptly allowed back-to-back one-out base hits to K.C. Hobson and Pierce Rankin. Two batters later, Markus Brisker supplied an RBI fielder’s choice to break the scoreless deadlock.
The Lugnuts tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings against Green, though Lansing’s relievers made the runs inconsequential.
Reliever Javier Avendano struck out all six hitters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings, and Ajay Meyer notched his Midwest League-leading fifth save of the year with a routine ninth.
Offensively, Pierce Rankin led the way for the Lugs, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Kevin Patterson added an RBI single and a pair of walks in four plate appearances.
The Lugnuts send lefty David Rollins (1-0, 2.00) to the mound for the second game of a three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks, opposed by Jeff Shields (0-1, 1.50). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. on a “Dollar Deal Day” Tuesday evening at Cooley Law School Stadium.
