Ellison, Silver Hawks shade Lugnuts, 4-3

LANSING, Mich. – Chris Ellison smacked an RBI single in the ninth inning to give the South Bend Silver Hawks (6-7) their first lead of the series and a 4-3 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (11-2) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

South Bend scored three runs in the final three innings against the Lugs bullpen to avoid the sweep.

Tom Belza reached on a K.C. Hobson error to begin the seventh and scored on a Fidel Pena RBI groundout.

Lansing immediately regained the lead in the home half of the seventh when Kevin Pillar drove in Markus Brisker with a two-out infield single to second baseman Gerson Montilla who fielded the grounder and threw to Matt Sample (Win, 2-0) covering the bag, but Sample did not tag first base.

In the eighth Ender Inciarte led off with a double and scored on a Gerson Montilla sacrifice fly to right. The Silver Hawks won it in the ninth against Javier Avendano (Loss, 1-1) when Ellison drove in Josh Parr with a single.

Lansing went 1-2-3 in the ninth against Willy Paredes (Save, 1).

Lugnuts starter Marcus Walden exited the game with a lead after five innings on the mound in which he allowed just two hits, one unearned run, struck out one and walked two.

Pillar drove in a pair in a 2-for-4 day and Brisker scored twice as he went 1-for-4.

The Lugnuts send top prospect Justin Nicolino (0-0, 02.00) to the mound to begin a three game series against the Western Division’s Burlington Bees, opposed by Raul Alcantara (0-1, 7.88).  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Community Field.

The Lansing Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday, April 25th, beginning a six-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. “Ladies Night” against Kane County. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
