Chiefs shut out Lugnuts, 2-0
PEORIA, IL – P.J. Francescon and two relievers handed the Lansing Lugnuts (13-4) their second 2-0 shutout in three days, lifting the Peoria Chiefs (7-10) to a series-opening victory on Sunday afternoon at Peoria Chiefs Stadium.
Francescon (Win, 1-1) threw a career-high seven innings, allowing just two baserunners and one hit while striking out five.
His Lugnuts counterpart, David Rollins, was nearly as good. After the first two base runners reached in the first inning, Rollins retired seven straight Chiefs en route to five shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.
The only two runs in the game came in the bottom of the sixth against the Lugnuts’ only reliever, Kramer Champlin (Loss, 1-1). The Chiefs loaded the bases against Champlin before a wild pitch allowed Zeke DeVoss to score, breaking the scoreless deadlock. Champlin struck out the next two hitters but an RBI single by Taiwan Easterling gave Peoria a 2-0 lead.
Champlin settled down to complete three innings, striking out four.
The Lugnuts did not go quietly in the ninth against closer Jeffrey Lorick (Save, 1). After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Carlos Perez knocked a two-out double to put the tying runs in scoring position. Lorick struck out Kevin Pillar looking to end the game.
Pillar and Perez had the only two Lugnuts hits of the game, both doubles. The Lugnuts send Marcus Walden (0-0, 3.07) to the mound against Peoria’s Jose Rosario in game two of the three-game series against the Chiefs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Peoria Chiefs Stadium.
The Lansing Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday, April 25th, beginning a six-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. “Ladies Night” against Kane County. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
