Hernandez, Lugnuts tame Cougars, 7-2
LANSING, Mich. – Jesse Hernandez tossed seven masterful innings and Kevin Patterson homered amid a three-RBI evening, propelling the Lansing Lugnuts (15-5) to a 7-2 win over the Kane County Cougars (10-10) on Wednesday night in the first of a three-game series at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Lugnuts, coming off a Tuesday loss in Peoria, still have yet to lose back-to-back games in 2012.
Lansing jumped on Cougars starter Aaron Brooks (Loss, 1-1) in the first inning for four runs on four hits, highlighted by Patterson’s two-RBI single.
Kane County entered Wednesday’s game with a MWL-best .281 team average but they were dominated by Hernandez (Win, 2-1). The righty did not allow a baserunner until a one-out single in the fourth, quickly erased on a double play.
Hernandez faced the minimum through six innings and allowed just one unearned run, four hits over seven innings while striking out five and walking none.
K.C. Hobson added a run in the fifth with his first home run of the year, part in a 1-for-4, two-RBI evening.
Patterson finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, including a tape measure solo blast in the sixth.
Chris Hawkins scored a run and recorded his team-high eighth multi-hit game with two hits in four at-bats. Carlos Perez added a double, RBI and a run scored in a 2-for-4 evening.
The Lansing Lugnuts continue their six-game homestand at Cooley Law School Stadium on Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday, April 26th at 7:05 p.m.
The Lugnuts send top prospect Noah Syndergaard (2-0, 2.31) to the mound opposite Cougars lefty Scott Alexander (1-0, 0.0). Tickets are available online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.# # #
