Lugnuts outclass Kane County, complete sweep

LANSING, Mich. – K.C. Hobson and Andy Burns each went deep in support of another great start from David Rollins to power the Lansing Lugnuts (17-5) to a 4-2 victory and a three-game sweep of the Kane County Cougars (10-12) on a Friday Grand Slam School Day at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Lansing’s Midwest League-leading pitching staff shut down Kane County’s league-best offense in the three-game series, allowing just four runs.

Hobson and Burns each went deep in the second inning against Edwin Carl (Loss, 1-2) to give Lansing a 2-0 lead. It was Hobson’s second homer of the series amid a 2-for-4 day.  Third baseman Burns went 2-for-4 on Friday, adding a double and scoring a pair of runs in addition to supplying his third long ball of the year.

After sitting out the opener, Burns went 5-for-7 with a double, triple and home run in the final two games of the series.

Lugnuts start David Rollins (Win, 2-0) limited the Cougars to only three hits and one run in five innings while striking out six before yielding to his bullpen.

Kramer Champlin tossed a pair of scoreless innings and Javier Avendano threw a perfect eighth inning.

Jon Berti added an RBI single in the seventh that was misplayed by Cougars right fielder Jorge Bonifacio, allowing Shane Opitz to score and giving Lansing a 4-1 lead.

Those runs proved important during an eventful ninth inning for Ajay Meyer (Save, 8). After an Opitz error kept the Cougars alive, Meyer walked in a run to bring Kane County within 4-2.  Pinch-hitter Murray Watts followed with a liner to left field that Kevin Pillar misjudged -- but was able to recover in time to snag and end the game.

The Lansing Lugnuts continue their six-game homestand at Cooley Law School Stadium on an Eat-A-Palooza Saturday, April 28th, at 7:05 p.m., offering the value of $17 ticket for a ticket and all-you-can-eat food inside the ballpark.

Lugs right-hander Marcus Walden (1-0, 2.29) starts opposite Clinton LumberKings lefty Jordan Shipers  (1-0, 1.93) in the pitching matchup.

Tickets are available online at the team website at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
