Lugnuts can't solve Loons' Martin in opener

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (18-7) fell victim to the Great Lakes Loons’ (13-12) 13-hit attack that was led by first baseman Joe Winker’s four RBI in the 7-1 loss Wednesday night at Dow Diamond.

Winker, one of four Loons with a multi-hit game,  finished a triple shy of the cycle with three hits in four at-bats, four RBI and two runs scored.

Jesus Arredondo led the top of the Loons’ order with three hits, two runs and a pair of stolen bases.

The 13 hits and seven runs proved to be plenty for lefty Jarret Martin (Win, 1-2), who dominated the Lugnuts over seven innings, tying his career-high. The only two hits Martin allowed came in the first two innings. Martin struck out five and issued just one walk, which was the only base runner the Lugnuts could muster in the final five innings of Martin’s outing.

Anthony DeSclafani, (Loss, 2-1) struggled in the first frame, surrendering three hits and three runs. DeSclafani would settle down after that and give up just one more tally in the third finishing after four innings, allowing four runs, on seven hits while striking out one and walking one.

Noah Syndergaard followed DeSclafani with five strikeouts over three innings. The righty tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings before a he gave up three, two-out runs in the seventh that gave the Loons a 7-0 lead.

Three of Lansing’s five hits were extra-base hits; Kevin Pillar and Andy Burns each hit a double, and Kenny Wilson broke the shutout in the ninth with a lead-off home run.

The Lugs send lefty David Rollins (2-0, 1.16) to the mound opposite the Loons’  Ryan O’Sullivan (1-2, 3.60) in game two of the three-game road trip spent entirely in Midland, Michigan.

The Lugs return home to Lansing on Saturday, May 5th, to open seven-game homestand beginning with a LAFCU Fireworks Cinco de Mayo celebration! Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
