Silver Hawks outlast Lugnuts in 11, 7-5

LANSING, Mich. – Ryan Schimpf grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded in the eleventh inning, and the South Bend Silver Hawks (13-13) hung on to outlast the Lansing Lugnuts (14-12), 7-5, on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

David Nick's RBI triple and Errol Hollinger's RBI single off of Lansing reliever Dustin Antolin (1-2) gave South Bend the lead in the top of the eleventh, but the Silver Hawks stranded the bases loaded to leave the door open for a potential Lugnuts comeback.

Lansing had previously fought back from an early 5-0 deficit, tying the game in the ninth on Ryan Goins' two-out RBI double.

In the bottom of the eleventh inning, Eric Eiland led off against new Hawks reliever Bradin Hagins with a hustle double to left-center. After Oliver Dominguez grounded out, Ryan Goins worked a walk from Hagins to conclude a 16-pitch marathon of an at-bat. Chris Hopkins dropped down a bunt single on the very next pitch to load the bases, only to see Schimpf send a tailor-made double play ball to second baseman Nick.

Yonata Ortega (1-1) earned the win for South Bend despite surrendering two runs in the ninth. Hagins picked up his third save in as many opportunities.

In the winning effort, Silver Hawks DH Matt Davidson went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored, and four RBIs.

Lansing and South Bend play a Grand Slam School Day on Wednesday at Cooley Law School Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 10:35 a.m. The starting pitching matchup will see Lugnuts left-hander Aaron Loup (2-0, 1.53) take on Silver Hawks right-hander Charles Brewer (2-2, 2.05).

Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
