Lugnuts double up Dragons, 6-3
DAYTON, OH – In his first start of the season, catcher Chris Schaeffer delivered two doubles and an RBI single, helping the Lansing Lugnuts (25-11) defeat the Dayton Dragons (14-23), 6-3, on a Mother’s Day matinee at Fifth Third Field.
The first place Lugnuts are 5-0 against eighth place Dayton this season, with all five meetings taking place in Ohio.
Lansing starter David Rollins (Win, 3-0) worked five innings for the victory, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out one.
Batterymate Schaeffer helped take care of the necessary offense, doubling and scoring in a two-run Lugs’ third inning before capping a 13-pitch at-bat against Dayton starter Dan Jensen (Loss, 1-3) with an RBI single in the fourth.
Right fielder Chris Hawkins went 3-for-5 with three RBIs while Kenny Wilson and Jon Berti each scored a pair of runs to assist the offense.
Blake McFarland worked two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two, yielding to Javier Avendano for a scoreless eighth.
The Dragons scored a pair of runs on three hits against Ajay Meyer in the ninth inning to close out the scoring.
Lugnuts left fielder Kevin Pillar went 0-for-5 a day after his record-tying six-hit performance.
Lansing right-hander Marcus Walden (2-1, 2.56) opposes Dragons right-hander Radhames Quezada (1-3, 2.50) in the third game of the series, 7:00 p.m. Monday.
