Sobolewski, Lugnuts stun Hot Rods in 8th, 4-3
BOWLING GREEN, Kent. – Mark Sobolewski keyed a table-turning four-run rally in the eighth inning with a three-run double, launching the Lansing Lugnuts (22-14) to a 4-3 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (11-25) on Saturday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
It was the Lugnuts' fifth consecutive win in addition to the team's sixth win in as many games against the Hot Rods in 2010.
Until the eighth inning rally, the story of the game had been Hot Rods starter Kyle Lobstein. The lefty twirled six scoreless frames, allowing only two hits and keeping the Lugnuts from advancing a runner past first base after the first inning.
After Jairo De La Rosa tossed a scoreless seventh, Bowling Green brought in reliever Deivis Mavarez to protect their 3-0 lead in the eighth. Mavarez (0-3) served up back-to-back singles to Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins before walking Ryan Schimpf to load the bases with none out. Sobolewski followed by sending a hot grounder into the left field corner to plate all of his teammates.
Pinch-runner Oliver Dominguez replaced Sobolewski at second base, coming home with the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by Sean Ochinko.
Matt Wright (2-0) earned the victory for the Lugnuts with a pair of scoreless innings in relief of starter Ryan Shopshire. Steve Turnbull picked up his eighth save with a perfect ninth.
In the winning effort for Lansing, shortstop Goins went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks to extend his on-base streak to 13 games.
Lansing goes for the four-game sweep of Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. ET, sending right-hander Dave Sever (2-1, 3.50) to the mound against Hot Rods right-hander Alexander Colome (2-2, 2.27).
The Lugnuts return home on May 21st to open a seven-game homestand. Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
