DeSclafani, Syndergaard shine in 5-1 victory

BOX SCORE | PLAY-BY-PLAY

LANSING, Mich. – K.C. Hobson sparked a three-run seventh with a home run to give the Lansing Lugnuts (28-12) a 5-1 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps (19-22) on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts snapped the TinCaps’ three-game winning streak to force a rubber match in the finale of the series on Friday.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the seventh, Hobson lifted a solo home run off Justin Hancock (Loss, 0-3) to break the tie as part of a 1-for-3 day with two runs scored.

Noah Syndergaard started for Lansing and tossed four scoreless, no-hit innings, walking just one, striking out three and only facing one over the minimum.

Anthony DeSclafani (Win, 3-1) entered in the fifth inning and struck out the first six hitters he faced to break his previous career high. The righty allowed just one run and finished with eight punch-outs and no walks.

The TinCaps’ first hit of the game came on an infield single with one out in the 7th.

Fort Wayne starter Cody Hebner faced the minimum through the first three innings and finished after six innings of four-hit ball that included four strikeouts and one run.  That lone run was scored by Jon Berti, who reached base four times on two walks and two singles, courtesy Andy Burns’ sacrifice fly.

Carlos Perez smacked a triple in the seventh as part of a 1-for-3 day and scored thanks to Kevin Patterson’s RBI groundout.

Kellen Sweeney was 1-for-3 and added an RBI single in the seventh frame.

Kevin Pillar recorded an eight inning RBI to go along with a walk and two hits in three at-bats.

Fort Wayne brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but Brandon Berl induced a groundout from Wednesday night’s home run hero, Lee Orr, to end the threat.

The Lansing Lugnuts conclude a three-game homestand against the TinCaps with a postgame LAFCU fireworks and the “King of Cool” Myron Noodleman will be at the ballpark for 7:05 p.m. start on Jackson Field. Lefty David Rollins (3-0, 2.23) starts for the Lugs opposite TinCaps lefty Frank Garces (1-2, 2.44). Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
