Loons come back, outslug Lugnuts, 10-7
LANSING, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons (28-16) scored seven unanswered runs and used a three-run homer from Brian Cavazos-Galvez to hold off the Lansing Lugnuts (26-17), 10-7, on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Couple with a loss by first place Lake County, the second place Loons drew within 1.5 games of the division lead. The third place Lugnuts remained three games behind the Captains.
The Nuts had only themselves to blame for the loss. Entering the game with the least walks issued in the Midwest League, three Lansing pitchers walked 10 batters to help Great Lakes come back from an early 5-0 deficit.
The Loons scored twice in the fourth inning to cut into the deficit before a Jerry Sands two-run homer, his 15th of the season, and an Angelo Songco RBI single tied the score in the fifth against Lansing southpaw Evan Crawford.
J.T. Wise's two-run single in the sixth broke the tie against reliever Casey Beck (0-2), who then served up Cavazos-Galvez's second homer of the year an inning later.
Wallach (4-0) picked up the win despite allowing six runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Justin Miller recorded his second save with 3 2/3 innings of relief.
In defeat, Lugnuts right fielder Brad McElroy (2-for-4) extended his on-base streak to 18 games and third baseman Mark Sobolewski (1-for-5) extended his on-base streak to 16 games. Shortstop Ryan Goins paced the offense with four hits in five at-bats.
The Nuts welcome in the West Michigan Whitecaps on Tuesday night for a special Dollar Dog Tuesday doubleheader at Cooley Law School Stadium beginning at 6:05 p.m.
Lansing will start right-hander Chad Jenkins (3-2, 3.62) in Game 1 and left-hander Aaron Loup (2-0, 2.48) in Game 2. West Michigan has announced left-hander Giovanni Soto (3-3, 2.11) as the starter in the opener and right-hander Victor Larez (3-5, 5.17) for the nightcap.
