Lugnuts explode for eight in 3rd to top Caps, 9-5
LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (28-18) scored eight runs in the third inning and coasted to a 9-5 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (17-30) on Wednesday night on Jackson Field.
Coupled with a pair of losses by the Great Lakes Loons in Fort Wayne, the Lugnuts moved back into second place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division, 2.5 games behind Lake County.
After trailing early 1-0 and 3-1, the Lugnuts blasted West Michigan starter Ramon Lebron (4-3) and reliever Nolan Moody, a former Michigan State Spartan, for seven hits and eight runs in the third inning. It was Lansing's biggest rally of the year, with 13 batters coming to the plate in the frame.
The offensive barrage came in support of Ryan Tepera (5-1), who allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings to notch the victory.
Scott Gracey tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief for Lansing before Steve Turnbull recorded the final five outs for his 11th save in as many chances.
Right-fielder Brad McElroy led the offensive attack with three hits, including a home run, to extend his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games.
The Whitecaps and Lugnuts play the finale of their four-game series on a Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium. Tigers top prospect Jacob Turner (0-2, 4.15) gets the start for West Michigan against Lansing right-hander Ryan Shopshire (2-3, 5.51). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
