Lugnuts enjoy hit parade in 14-7 rout
LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (36-14) pounded out a season-high 19 hits in a 14-7 rout of the Lake County Captains (25-25) on Monday evening at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Lansing’s sizzling offense has scored 24 runs and recorded 37 total hits in the last two games against the Captains. During the first six games of the current homestand, the Lugnuts are 5-1 and batting .360 as a team.
The Lugnuts jumped on the board in a big way in the first inning with six runs to knock out the Captains’ starter Felix Sterling (Loss, 2-4), who recorded just two outs and surrendered four hits and two walks in his shortest outing of the season.
Lansing allowed Lake County to pull to within three runs twice but pulled away late thanks to one of the best offensive outputs by the Lugnuts this season. All nine starters either scored a run or delivered an RBI and six Lugnuts had multi-hit games.
Jon Berti and Kevin Pillar each had four hits. Berti went 6-for-4 with three runs, three stolen bases and one RBI. Pillar was 4-for-6, stole a base, scored a run, smacked a triple and drove in a pair of runs.
Carlos Perez added three hits and scored three times; Shane Opitz drove in a pair and scored two runs in addition to three hits.
Noah Syndergaard started for the Lugnuts and pitched around a rough second inning as part of a four-inning, four-hit performance in which he allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out five while walking none.
Anthony DeSclafani (Win, 4-1) entered in the fifth inning and promptly allowed four runs before settling down and holding the Captains scoreless in the final three innings of his four-inning performance in which he struck out three and walked one.
The Lugnuts go for a series victory and a 6-1 homestand on a dollar Tuesday, May 29th, 2012 with David Rollins (4-0, 2.64) on the mound opposite the Captains lefty Elvis Araujo (2-4, 2.66).
