Allen, South Bend cut down Lansing, 6-2
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Scottie Allen fired six shutout innings and the South Bend Silver Hawks (23-27) handed the Lansing Lugnuts (28-21) their third straight loss, 6-2, on Saturday night at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
The Silver Hawks jumped out early on Lansing starter Evan Crawford, building a 5-0 lead on two runs in the first inning and three more in the third and coasting behind their 18-year-old starter.
Allen (2-1) struck out three batters, walked none, and scattered seven singles in keeping the Midwest League's top offense off-balance.
Crawford (3-2) lasted only three innings, allowing five hits, four walks, and five runs in the loss. It was a far cry from his previous start against the Silver Hawks on May 6th, when he pitched five one-hit shutout innings.
The middle of the Lansing order -- Mark Sobolewski, A.J. Jimenez, and Sean Ochinko -- each collected a pair of hits in the loss. Ochinko supplied a two-run single in the eighth inning to break up the shutout.
Lugnuts right fielder Brad McElroy went 1-for-4, reaching base in his 23rd straight game.
The Nuts and Hawks play the third game of their four-game series on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Lansing right-hander Chad Jenkins (3-3, 3.74) starts against South Bend right-hander Brad Gemberling (0-2, 2.84).
Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
