Kernels crush Lugnuts, 11-5

LANSING, Mich. – The Cedar Rapids Kernels (35-19) raced out to a 10-0 lead and routed the error-prone Lansing Lugnuts (30-23), 11-5, on Thursday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.

Lansing's infield committed five errors in the game, four in the first three innings that led to nine unearned runs. The Lugnuts entered the game with the best fielding percentage in the Midwest League.

Nuts starter Dave Sever (1-3) bore the brunt of the poor defense, allowing nine runs on eight hits in two innings-plus -- but only one of those runs was earned.

Tyler Skaggs (5-2) picked up the win for Cedar Rapids, limiting Lansing to two runs on six hits in five innings.

Skaggs was relieved by Tyler Kehrer, who walked nine batters in just 2 1/3 innings -- but only allowed three sixth inning runs.

The Lugnuts stranded 10 runners on base from the fifth through the eighth innings, 12 in total.

Adding injury to insult, both second baseman Ryan Schimpf and reliever Dustin Antolin left the game due to injury. Schimpf was hit on the head by a Skaggs pitch in the fifth inning, while Antolin pulled up lame one batter into the seventh inning.

The Lugnuts try to reverse their fortunes when they welcome in the Quad Cities River Bandits on Friday night for the start of a three-game series. Lansing left-hander Aaron Loup (3-0, 2.61) receives the spot start, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.

Tickets to all Lansing Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
