Lugnuts thwart Bees again, 5-3
BURLINGTON, IA – The Lansing Lugnuts (34-27) scored five unanswered runs between the seventh and eighth innings to send the Burlington Bees (20-42) to their fifth consecutive defeat, 5-3, on Saturday night at Community Field.
Down 2-0 entering the seventh, Brad Glenn's solo home run and Ryan Goins' two-out RBI double tied the score.
An inning later, a Kenny Wilson RBI infield single off of Burlington reliever Onassis Sirrett (1-1) broke the tie. On the next pitch, Wilson and Brad Glenn executed a double steal with Glenn swiping home for a 4-2 lead. A subsequent error by Bees shortstop J.D. Alfaro allowed Wilson to score.
Deivy Batista's RBI double off of Nestor Molina in the bottom of the eighth made things interesting, cutting the lead to two runs and putting the tying runs in scoring position. But Lansing reliever Casey Beck induced Jose Bonilla to fly out to right to end the inning.
Beck then struck out the side in the ninth for his first save.
The win hung upon Matt Wright (3-1), who fired two scoreless innings in relief of starter Egan Smith. Smith allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in five innings.
In the victory, Lansing lost catcher Sean Ochinko to an apparent injury in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lugnuts wrap up their six-game road trip with right-hander Ryan Shopshire (3-5, 5.79) on the mound for Sunday's 3:00 finale, opposed by Bees right-hander Bryan Paukovits (3-3, 3.31).
The Nuts return home on Tuesday, June 15th, for a doubleheader against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Tickets to all Lansing Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
