Goins leads Lugnuts sweep of Bees, 3-2
BURLINGTON, IA – Ryan Goins doubled to break up Bryan Paukovits' no-hit bid in the seventh, then chopped a two-run tie-breaking single in the eight to lift the Lansing Lugnuts (35-27) to a 3-2 victory over the Burlington Bees (20-43) on Sunday afternoon at Community Field.
The Lugnuts completed the three-game sweep of the last place Bees and won the last four games of their six-game road trip.
Lansing starter Ryan Shopshire (4-5) captured the win, working seven strong frames and allowing only a fourth inning Joey Lewis home run.
Still, the All-Star Bees right-hander almost made it stand up. There was only one baserunner against Paukovits through six innings, Ryan Schimpf reaching in the second inning on an error by first baseman Juan Graterol.
In the seventh, however, Goins smoked a Paukovits pitch off the wall in right-center. Two batters later, Brad Glenn tied the score with a sacrifice fly.
An inning later, Bees reliever Ryan Dennick (1-3) walked two straight Lugnuts with one out and was pulled for Rodolfo Encarnacion. After a Kenny Wilson walk and Oliver Dominguez foul out, Goins chopped a single into right field for a 3-1 lead.
Steve Turnbull set down the side in the ninth around a Carlo Testa solo homer for his 16th save of the year.
The Lugnuts get the day off on Monday before beginning a three-day, four-game series on Tuesday with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
Tickets to all Lansing Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
