Captains edge Lugnuts, 3-2
EASTLAKE, OH – Casey Frawley's third single of the evening proved the most significant, a grounder into left field that supplied the go-ahead run in a 3-2 Lake County Captains (42-25) victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (36-31) in the opener of a three-game series on Friday at Classic Park.
Delvi Cid led off the bottom of the eighth inning against Lansing reliever Brian Slover (2-2) with a dribbling single, moving to second on a passed ball, to third on a Steve Turnbull wild pitch, and scoring the decisive run on Frawley's single through a drawn-in infield.
Jeremie Tice and Kyle Smith each homered to aid the winning cause for the Captains, who twice blew one-run leads.
Lansing left fielder Eric Eiland went 2-for-3 with a game-tying RBI groundout in the 5th and a game-tying RBI single in the 7th.
Eiland ended the game in the on-deck circle, watching as Lake County's Jose Flores blew through a perfect ninth inning for his first save.
Captains reliever Jeremy Johnson (3-0) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings.
The Lugnuts send right-hander Ryan Shopshire (4-5, 5.35) to the mound on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Lake County left-hander Matt Packer (4-3, 2.05) in the middle affair of the series.
