Captains deep-six Lugnuts, 6-2
EASTLAKE, OH – Chun Chen blasted a tape measure two-run homer and Matt Packer and Francisco Jimenez combined to strike out 15 batters, helping the Lake County Captains (43-25) defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (36-32), 6-2, on Saturday night at Classic Park.
The first place Captains improved to 5-0 against the Lugnuts, with Lansing's offense yet to score over four runs in any game. Lake County also clinched the Eastern Division title thanks to Great Lakes' 4-3 13-inning loss at Dayton.
Sean Ochinko's RBI double and Ryan Schimpf's sacrifice fly gave the Lugnuts a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Captains responded with two-run rallies in the second, fourth, and fifth innings against Lugnuts starter Ryan Shopshire (4-6).
The last pair of insurance runs were supplied by Chen, whose sixth home run of the season completely cleared the left field bleachers and one-hopped onto the roof of adjacent building.
Packer (5-3) earned the win, allowing six hits while striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.
He was relieved by Jimenez for the final 3 2/3 innings, and the left-handed reliever added eight strikeouts of his own in notching his first save.
In defeat, Ochinko went 3-for-4 and Kevin Ahrens added a pair of doubles for Lansing.
The Lugnuts send right-hander Matt Fields (1-2, 3.92) to the mound on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., opposed by Lake County left-hander Vidal Nuno (2-1, 6.62) in the final game of the first half.
