Lugnuts lose shutout, recover to sweep Dayton, 5-4, in 11th

LANSING, Mich – Chris Hopkins drew a bases-loaded walk with no outs in bottom of the eleventh inning, and the Lansing Lugnuts (3-0; 39-33) recovered from a dramatic game-tying Cameron Satterwhite grand slam to defeat the Dayton Dragons (0-3; 30-42), 5-4, on Sunday afternoon on Jackson Field.

After waiting out a 1:23 rain delay at the start of the game, Lugnuts starter Ryan Shopshire brought a 4-0 lead into the ninth inning. After two hit batsmen and a single loaded the bases, Shopshire struck out Josh Garton to pin the Dragons down to their final out.

Satterwhite walloped the next pitch well over the wall in left-center, his third home run of the year, thereby putting an end to both the shutout bid and the complete game effort.

Dayton carried the momentum into the top of the eleventh, putting the go-ahead run at third base with none out and loading the bases with one out. But Steve Turnbull retired Tommy Nurre on an infield fly and Nestor Molina (4-2) took care of Frank Pfister on a ground out to short, ending the threat.

In the home half, Dragons reliever Mike Konstanty (0-4) loaded the bases on a hit batsmen, a bunt single, and (following a passed ball) an intentional walk to Karim Turkamani. Hopkins fell behind 0-and-2, but received four straight balls from Konstanty to end the game.

The Lugnuts have defeated Dayton in nine straight contests after losing three in a row in Ohio to open the year. Five of the meetings between the clubs have gone to extras, including two in the just-completed series.

Lansing next embarks upon a six-game road trip, opening a three-game series at Bowling Green on Monday night at 8:05 p.m. ET. Lugnuts right-hander Matt Fields (1-2, 3.71) starts against Hot Rods northpaw Jason McEachern (2-6, 5.12).

The Lansing Lugnuts' next home game is on Sunday, July 4th, at Cooley Law School Stadium, a special 7:05 p.m. start time with LAFCU Fireworks following the game.

Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
