Silver Hawks squeak past Lugnuts, 3-2
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Scottie Allen struck out nine batters over six strong innings and the South Bend Silver Hawks (4-2; 34-40) eked out a 3-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (4-3; 40-36) on Thursday night at The Cove.
Alberto Diaz's sacrifice fly broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, capping off a two-run South Bend rally against Lansing starter Ryan Tepera (7-3).
Tepera only allowed three hits in his six innings but two of those hits were RBI singles, one by Matt Davidson and one by Ramon Castillo.
The slim offensive output was enough for Allen (3-2) and reliever Yonata Ortega. The 18-year old starter scattered eight hits and a walk in earning the victory, while Ortega tossed the final three innings for his 16th save.
In the loss, Kevin Nolan went 2-for-3 with a walk to extend his team-high hitting streak to 15 games and Ryan Goins went 2-for-4 to reach base in his 16th straight game.
Lansing right-hander Ryan Shopshire (4-6, 5.42) starts the middle affair of the series on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Silver Hawks right-hander Brad Gemberling (2-4, 4.60).
The Lansing Lugnuts' next home game is on Sunday, July 4th, at Cooley Law School Stadium, a special 7:05 p.m. start time with LAFCU Fireworks following the game.
