Lugnuts top Silver Hawks, 4-2
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Yan Gomes knocked a tie-breaking two-run double, helping the Lansing Lugnuts (6-3; 42-36) come back to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks (4-4; 34-42), 4-2, on Saturday night at The Cove.
Andrew Fie's two-run first inning triple put South Bend on top early, but Lansing tallied once in the third inning before Gomes' blow capped off a three-run fifth to put the visitors up for good.
Lugnuts starter Matt Fields (2-3) earned the win, allowing eight hits over five innings while striking out four. Both first inning runs were unearned for Fields, though this was only because of a throwing error committed by the right-hander earlier in the inning.
Nestor Molina tossed three scoreless one-hit innings in relief of Fields, and Steve Turnbull struck out the side in the ninth for his 19th save.
South Bend starter Diogenes Rosario (4-3) suffered the loss, reached for four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Chris Hopkins led the offensive effort for Lansing with a pair of singles, a double, and two runs scored in four at-bats.
Kevin Nolan went 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his team-high hitting streak to 17 games, while Ryan Goins went 1-for-4 with a sacrifice fly to reach base for the 18th straight game.
The Lugnuts open a three-game series against Lake County on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. at Cooley Law School Stadium, Lansing left-hander Egan Smith (1-0, 3.00) opposing Captains right-hander Trey Haley (4-3, 5.23). A special LAFCU Fireworks spectacular will follow the game.
