Cid helps Captains edge Lugnuts in 9th, 4-3

LANSING, Mich. – Ben Carlson scored on Delvi Cid's RBI infield single in the ninth inning, and the Lake County Captains (7-5; 51-30) gritted out a 4-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (7-5; 43-38) on Tuesday night on Jackson Field.

Lansing right fielder Chris Hopkins had tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run infield single in the seventh inning, but the Captains responded in the ninth against reliever Brian Slover.

With runners at first and third and two outs, Cid bounced the first pitch from Slover (3-4) up the middle. Second baseman Ryan Schimpf dove to stop it but was unable to make a play as Carlson came home from third.

Nick Sarianides (6-2) pitched the final three innings to earn the win in relief of Matt Packer, who struck out nine batters over six innings in a no-decision.

Lansing starter Ryan Tepera twirled five frames, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three.

Hopkins, Eric Eiland, and Ryan Schimpf each went 2-for-4 in the loss.

The Lugnuts next open up a three-game series with Great Lakes, sending right-hander Ryan Shopshire (5-6, 5.32) to the Dow Diamond mound at 7:05 on Wednesday night. The Loons will counter with right-hander Josh Wall (4-4, 3.81).

Lansing returns home to begin a three-game series with Bowling Green at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Country Night at Cooley Law School Stadium, with LAFCU Fireworks following the game.

Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
