Loons come back in 8th to double up Lugnuts, 4-2

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Great Lakes Loons (12-2; 55-28) scored three runs in the eighth inning for a 4-2 comeback victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (7-7; 43-40) on Thursday night at Dow Diamond, Great Lakes' ninth straight win.

Riding a two-run homer from Ryan Schimpf and six scoreless innings from starter Matt Fields, the Lugnuts brought a 2-0 lead into the late-going.

Nick Buss's RBI double off of Aaron Loup in the seventh halved the deficit, and the Loons completed the comeback an inning later.

Angelo Songco and Blake Smith led off the eighth against Loup (3-2) with singles. Brian Cavazos-Galvez tied the game against Steve Turnbull with an RBI single, before Brian Ruggiano's sacrifice fly gave Great Lakes a 3-2 lead. An A.J. Jimenez run-scoring throwing error closed out the scoring.

Steve Smith (2-2) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, and Steve Ames struck out the side in the ninth to record his third save.

In defeat, Ryan Goins went 2-for-4 with a double to extend his on-base streak to 22 games.

The Lugnuts will look to avoid a three-game sweep on Friday night at 7:05 p.m., sending left-hander Egan Smith (1-0, 3.27) to the mound against Loons right-hander Allen Webster (8-5, 2.67).
