Lugnuts walk all over Loons, 6-0
MIDLAND, Mich. – Egan Smith combined with Nestor Molina on an eight-hit shutout and the Lansing Lugnuts (8-7; 44-40) drew a season-high 12 walks in a 6-0 whitewashing of the Great Lakes Loons (12-3; 55-29) on Friday night at Dow Diamond.
The outcome snapped the Loons' nine-game win streak while averting a three-game sweep.
A.J. Jimenez provided a two-run single in the first inning and Kenny Wilson added insurance in the ninth with a two-run single of his own. In between, the Loons pitchers struggled to find the strike zone.
Great Lakes starter Allen Webster (8-6) walked eight batters in just 3 2/3 innings, and relievers Andy Suiter and Edwin Contreras walked a pair of batters apiece.
Eric Eiland and Ryan Goins were the main beneficiaries of the wildness, drawing four walks apiece, with Goins extending his on-base streak to 22 games.
It was all more than enough support for Smith (2-0), who scattered eight hits over six innings-plus, striking out five. Molina followed with three perfect innings for his first save.
The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium in time for Country Night, Saturday at 7:05 p.m., opening up a three-game set with Bowling Green. Lansing right-hander Dave Sever (2-5, 3.97) opposes Hot Rods right-hander Alexander Colome (5-5, 3.22). LAFCU fireworks follow the game.
Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
