Shopshire, Lugnuts edge Hot Rods, 1-0

LANSING, Mich. – Ryan Shopshire struck out seven over five one-hit innings, combining with three relievers on a five-hitter as the Lansing Lugnuts (9-9; 45-42) blanked the visiting Bowling Green Hot Rods (9-9; 40-47), 1-0, on Monday evening on Jackson Field.

Ryan Goins' third inning RBI single provided the only scoring in the victory, averting a three-game sweep for Lansing.

Hot Rods spot-starter Albert Suarez (0-2) suffered the loss, lasting 2 1/3 innings and allowing three hits and three walks. He departed in favor of Tyree Hayes with Kenny Wilson at third base and one out, only to see Hayes serve up Goins' liner into left-center.

Bowling Green loaded the bases against Shopshire (6-7) in the fourth inning before squandering base hits in the sixth inning against Scott Gracey and seventh inning against Aaron Loup.

Facing Nestor Molina In the eighth, the Hot Rods put runners at the corners with one out. After a Tyler Bortnick pop out, Brett Nommensen's hard grounder was speared by diving first baseman Kevin Nolan, who forced out Nommensen himself to end the visitors' best scoring opportunity.

Molina worked a perfect ninth for his second save.

Sean Ochinko and A.J. Jimenez both went 2-for-4 in the winning effort for Lansing, while Bortnick added a pair of hits for the Hot Rods in the loss.

The Lugnuts are off on Tuesday before opening a six-game road trip with an 8:05 p.m. ET affair at Wisconsin, with Lansing right-hander Matt Fields (2-3, 2.95) opposing Timber Rattlers lefty Del Howell (1-4, 5.37).
