Rams, Snappers stave off Lugnuts, 5-4
BELOIT, Wisc. – Danny Rams homered and drove in three runs, helping the Beloit Snappers (9-13; 46-45) edge the Lansing Lugnuts (12-11; 48-44), 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field.
Rams belted a two-run homer in the third inning off of Ryan Shopshire, his tenth home run of the year, helping Beloit build an early 4-0 lead.
After a Lugnuts three-run rally in the fifth shaved the Snappers' lead to a run, Rams added an important RBI single in the seventh inning to provide the winning margin.
Brad Glenn belted a solo home run in the eighth inning for Lansing, his tenth, cutting the Beloit lead back to a run.
The Lugnuts had a chance in the ninth, but Eliecer Cardenas struck out both Kevin Nolan and Sean Ochinko with the potential tying run aboard to end the game.
Michael Tonkin (3-6) allowed three runs on six hits in five innings to earn the win. Cardenas recorded his third save.
Shopshire (6-8) struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings but gave up four runs on six hits, including a Josmil Pinto solo homer, in the loss.
Nolan went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to lead Lansing's offense, assisted by a two-run double from Ochinko.
Lansing right-hander Matt Fields (2-4, 4.00) starts the rubber match of the three-game series on Monday 1:00 p.m. ET opposite Beloit right-hander Tom Stuifbergen (4-0, 1.36).
The Lugnuts return home to Cooley Law School Stadium on Wednesday, July 21st, beginning a stretch of nine home games in 10 days. Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
