Schimpf, Lugnuts tame Cougars again, 7-5
LANSING, Mich. – Ryan Schimpf homered and doubled twice, and the host Lansing Lugnuts (14-12; 50-45) defeated the Kane County Cougars (16-10; 48-47) for the second straight night, 7-5, on Thursday evening on Jackson Field.
Max Stassi's two-run double and Jason Christian's RBI single staked the Cougars to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the advantage didn't last long.
Neither did Kane County starting pitcher Kenny Smalley.
A.J. Jimenez's two-run double trimmed the score to 3-2 in bottom of the first. An inning later, RBI singles by Justin Jackson and Sean Ochinko gave Lansing the lead for good and knocked out the Cougars starter.
Smalley (0-1) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings in the defeat.
The Kane County relievers were not spared from the Lansing attack either, with Schimpf victimizing Chris Mederos with an RBI double in the third and Josh Lansford with a solo home run in the eighth. It was the second baseman's sixth homer of the year.
In contrast, Lansing starter Dave Sever (4-6) recovered from his rough start to finish off five innings of six-hit, three-run ball with five strikeouts for the victory.
Brian Slover fired two scoreless innings and Casey Beck pitched a scoreless eighth before a Jose Crisotomo two-run single off of Steve Turnbull in the ninth closed out the scoring.
Every Lansing starter with the exception of lead-off hitter Kenny Wilson hit safely in the 13-hit outburst. Ochinko, Jimenez, and Jackson each added a pair of hits to aid Schimpf's efforts.
The Lugnuts go for the three-game sweep on Friday at 7:05 p.m., Christian Family Night at Cooley Law School Stadium featuring post-game LAFCU Fireworks. The pitching match-up will feature Lansing right-hander Ryan Tepera (8-4, 3.30) against Kane County right-hander Dan Straily (7-6, 4.35).
