Lugnuts one-hit Cougars to complete sweep, 3-0
LANSING, Mich. – Ryan Tepera combined with three relievers on a one-hitter, and the Lansing Lugnuts (15-12; 51-45) completed a three-game sweep of the Kane County Cougars (16-11; 48-48) with a 3-0 victory on Friday evening on Jackson Field.
The Cougars entered the series having won nine of 10 games but batted just .156 (14-for-90) in Lansing, getting outscored 12-6 in the three games. The Lugnuts led 23 of the 25 1/2 innings of the series.
Tepera (9-4) pitched five innings for the win, allowing only Leonardo Gil's infield single up the third base line in the fifth. It was the second straight start for the right-hander that ended in a one-hit Lugnuts victory.
Scott Gracey followed Tepera with two perfect innings, Matt Wright struck out the side in the eighth, and Nestor Molina pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save.
Brad Glenn supplied a first inning sacrifice fly and Kevin Ahrens and Sean Ochinko added solo homers to lead the offensive cause against Kane County starter Dan Straily (7-7).
The Lugnuts open up a three-game series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the Clinton LumberKings, with the main interest surrounding Lansing acting manager John Tamargo, Jr., opposite Clinton manager John Tamargo, Sr.
It's Jimmy Buffett Night at Cooley Law School Stadium featuring post-game LAFCU Fireworks. The pitching match-up will see Lansing right-hander Ryan Shopshire (6-8, 5.25) face off against Kane County left-hander Nick Czyz (2-1, 3.51).
