Lugnuts power past Ochoa, LumberKings, 12-7

LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (16-12; 52-45) offense erupted for 16 hits, upstaging a solo slugging act from Clinton catcher Blake Ochoa, in a 12-7 rout of the LumberKings (13-14; 50-46) on Saturday night on Jackson Field.

Batting eighth in the order, Ochoa drove in all seven LumberKings runs with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, a two-run homer in the fifth, and a grand slam in the sixth.

But the Lugnuts withstood the damage, battering Kings starter Nick Czyz (2-2) for nine hits and five runs in four innings before blowing the game open with a six-run fifth inning against Ryan Moorer.

The offensive outburst lifted Lansing acting manager John Tamargo, Jr., over Clinton manager John Tamargo, Sr. in a unique match-up of father vs. son.

Lugnuts manager Sal Fasano was relaxing in Chicago on the final day of a four-game break from the season.

Ryan Shopshire (7-8) earned the victory for the Nuts, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. Errors by infielders Kevin Ahrens and Justin Jackson made five of those runs unearned.

Each member of the Lugnuts starting lineup notched an RBI in the laugher, with only Kenny Wilson failing to hit safely and only Sean Ochinko failing to score a run.

Kevin Nolan led the way with three hits (two doubles), three runs scored, and three RBIs. Ahrens also added three hits while Jackson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks.

The Lugnuts go for their fifth consecutive win on a 2:05 p.m. Sunday Kids Day at Cooley Law School Stadium, sending right-hander Matt Fields (2-5, 4.04) against Clinton right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (6-4, 2.90).

Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
