Despite Ahrens' big day, Hot Rods beat Lugnuts 10-8
BOWLING GREEN, Kent. – Kevin Ahrens homered twice and scored four runs, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (17-18; 48-56) knocked off the Lansing Lugnuts (19-16; 55-49), 10-8, on Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Ahrens' first home run, a solo shot with two outs in the third, staked the Lugnuts out to a 5-1 lead and knocked out Bowling Green starter Aaron Dott.
But the Hot Rods scored seven runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 8-5, capped off by Ty Morrison's three-run homer off of Lugnuts starter Egan Smith (4-1).
Tyree Hayes (3-0) hurled 3 1/3 innings out of the bullpen to earn the win for Bowling Green, though it did not come easily.
Ahrens and Balbino Fuenmayor each homered against Hot Rods relief ace Scott Shuman in the eighth inning to cut into a 10-6 deficit.
In the ninth, home plate umpire Matt Deane ejected Smith from the dugout following a called strike to Kevin Nolan. After Nolan flied out, Sean Ochinko doubled to left field. Shuman stiffened, retiring Brad Glenn and A.J. Jimenez to end the game.
Lansing will start right-hander Dave Sever (4-7, 4.67) in the rubber match of the series at 7:35 ET on Monday night, opposite Bowling Green left-hander Kyle Lobstein (7-5, 4.49).
