Glenn, Ahrens launch Lugnuts past Hot Rods in 9th
BOWLING GREEN, Kent. – Brad Glenn and Kevin Ahrens slugged two-out home runs in the ninth inning, carrying the Lansing Lugnuts (20-16; 56-49) to a stirring 10-9 comeback win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (17-19; 48-57) on Monday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The Hot Rods had scored six runs off of three Lugnuts relievers in the bottom of the eighth, turning a 7-3 deficit into a 9-7 lead. Julio Cedeno provided the crowning blow with a two-run single against Nestor Molina, a third run scoring when Cedeno's advance to second drew a throw from catcher A.J. Jimenez.
Alex Koronis (6-4) set down Eric Eiland and Sean Ochinko to open the ninth, bringing the Hot Rods within an out of the victory. Glenn slugged his 12th home run of the season to shave the score to 9-8. Jimenez followed with a single to left and Ahrens cracked a two-run homer to put the Lugnuts ahead.
It was Ahrens' fourth home run of the series. The third baseman had entered the weekend with only one homer in 37 games with the Lugnuts.
Molina (8-2) retired the Hot Rods in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
In the win, Ochinko went 4-for-5 with a double, home run, and five RBIs while Justin Jackson supplied his first home run of the year.
The two teams combined to score 53 runs in the three-game series.
Lansing remained in a second-place tie in the Eastern Division with Fort Wayne, which earlier had defeated Great Lakes.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts begin a significant four-game series on a Dollar Dog Tuesday at Cooley Law School Stadium, Fort Wayne starting right-hander Matt Jackson (2-1, 3.47) against Lansing right-hander Ryan Tepera (9-5, 3.19).
