Hagerty, TinCaps top Lugnuts for 2nd place, 8-5
LANSING, Mich. – Jason Hagerty went 4-for-5 with two home runs and Jonathan Galvez smacked a go-ahead two-run homer, carrying the Fort Wayne TinCaps (21-16; 57-50) to an 8-5 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (20-17; 56-50) on Tuesday on Jackson Field.
The win also broke a 2nd place tie between the two Eastern Division outfits. Both teams remained in prime position for the two remaining playoff berths thanks to a loss by fourth place Bowling Green.
Following goose eggs in the first two innings, the TinCaps and Lugnuts alternated scoring rallies in the third, fourth, and fifth frames. Following a game-tying solo homer from Hagerty in the top of the fifth, Kevin Ahrens gave Lansing a 5-4 lead in the home half with a two-out RBI single.
Galvez struck back against reliever Matt Wright (3-2) in the sixth inning, lining his sixth home run of the year to give Fort Wayne the lead for good.
Hagerty and Nate Freiman added back-to-back homers in the ninth off of Casey Beck to add a measure of insurance.
Relievers Mike Watt (5-4), Stiven Osuna, Jackson Quezada, and Miles Mikolas held the Lugnuts at bay after starter Matt Jackson lasted only four innings.
Mikolas worked a perfect ninth for his third save.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts play the second game of their four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Josh Spence receives his first start for Fort Wayne, opposed by Lansing right-hander Ryan Shopshire (7-8, 5.22).
