TinCaps skunk Lugnuts, 5-0
LANSING, Mich. – Jason Hagerty walloped a jawdropping home run and four TinCaps pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, sending Fort Wayne (22-16; 58-50) to a 5-0 whitewashing of the Lansing Lugnuts (20-18; 56-51) on Wednesday night on Jackson Field.
Hagerty victimized starter Ryan Shopshire (7-9) with his third home run in two games, breaking a scoreless tie in the sixth with a tape-measure drive that soared to the right of the stadium videoboard and bounced high off the roof of the Tailgate Terrace beyond the right-center field wall.
The Fort Wayne catcher added an RBI double against reliever Aaron Loup an inning later, and Edinson Rincon drilled a three-run double in the ninth against Steve Turnbull -- but the TinCaps' hurlers did not need any insurance runs on this night.
One batter over the minimum reached base for the Lugnuts, who hit into two double plays and had a runner caught stealing and another picked off.
Fort Wayne starter Josh Spence set the early tone, striking out six batters over the first three innings. Jose De Paula (7-3) blanked Lansing in the fourth and fifth to pick up the victory. Robert Poutier followed suit in the next two frames, and Stiven Osuna recorded the last six outs for his first save.
Nate Freiman went 3-for-4 with a walk for Fort Wayne in the win, while Lansing received a pair of singles from Kevin Nolan and a double from Jake Marisnick In defeat.
The third game of the four-game set will be held at 7:05 p.m. on a special "Salsa Night" Labatt Blue Light Thirsty Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium. Lugs right-hander Matt Fields (3-6, 4.03) opposes Caps left-hander Pedro Hernandez (3-3, 3.75).
Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
