7th heaven for the TinCaps in 11-5 win over Lugs
LANSING, Mich. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps (23-16; 59-50) scored seven runs in the seventh inning en route to an 11-5 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (20-19; 56-52) on Thursday night on Jackson Field.
The second place Caps have won the first three games of the four-game series, distancing themselves from the third place Lugnuts in the Eastern Division.
After blowing leads of 2-0, 3-1, and 4-3 earlier in the game, Fort Wayne's offense set about building an insurmountable lead against relievers Brian Slover and Nestor Molina in the fateful seventh.
After a Dean Anna groundout, Slover (3-5) hit Wande Olabisi with a pitch and then allowed three consecutive singles to plate a pair of runs. Molina entered, only to be greeted by a Jeudy Valdez RBI single, a Griffin Benedict RBI double, and a Jonathan Galvez two-run double. Anna tacked on an RBI single of his own to finish the rally.
TinCaps reliever Jeff Ibarra (1-1) picked up the victory despite allowing a run in each of his two innings pitched.
Fort Wayne finished the game with 17 base hits, four of those from third baseman Jedd Gyorko and three supplied by Valdez.
Lead-off hitter Danny Payne only went 1-for-6, but his one hit was a solo home run to the deepest part of Jackson Field, over the 412-foot sign in right-center.
In the losing cause for Lansing, A.J. Jimenez and Ryan Schimpf each went 2-for-4 and Kevin Ahrens provided a two-run single.
The Lugnuts look to avoid the four-game home sweep on "As Seen on TV Night" at Cooley Law School Stadium. The 7:05 p.m. Friday affair will feature Lansing left-hander Egan Smith (4-1, 4.13) against Fort Wayne right-hander Jerry Sullivan (7-4, 4.50) with post-game LAFCU Fireworks.
Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
