TinCaps romp, 12-3, complete sweep of Lugnuts
LANSING, Mich. – The Fort Wayne TinCaps (24-16; 60-50) used six pitchers and received runs scored by only five members of their starting lineup -- and pounded Lansing Lugnuts (20-20; 56-53), 12-3, completing a four-game sweep before a crowd of 10,113 on Friday night on Jackson Field.
The Caps outscored the Lugnuts 33-12 in the four games, breaking a tie for second place in the Eastern Division and building a commanding lead for a second half playoff slot.
The top four hitters in the Fort Wayne lineup dominated the game, supplying 10 of the team's 15 base hits and scored 11 of the 12 runs.
Lead-off man Danny Payne singled twice, walked twice, and scored four runs; Jeudy Valdez added three hits, two runs, and two RBIs; Jason Hagerty went 2-for-4 with two walks, scored three runs and drove in four, three on a home run in the ninth inning; and clean-up hitter Nate Freiman went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, a pair of RBIs, and his 12th home run of the year.
Lugnuts starter Egan Smith (4-2) bore the brunt of the offense, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in five innings.
On the other side, Fort Wayne received a patchwork pitching performance from six different hurlers. Starter Jerry Sullivan, Robert Poutier (4-2), and Stiven Osuna went two innings each. Jon Berger, Jackson Quezada, and Miles Mikolas worked the final three frames.
In defeat, Lansing second baseman Ryan Schimpf went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a triple, a HBP, a run scored, and an RBI.
The Lugnuts open a seven-game road trip on Saturday night with the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series at Great Lakes. Lansing right-hander Dave Sever (4-7, 4.66) opposes Loons right-hander Allen Webster (10-7, 2.56).
