Wilborn, Loons fly by Lugnuts, 11-0
MIDLAND, Mich. – Backed by a 15-hit attack, Greg Wilborn tied a team record with 12 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings as the Great Lakes Loons (32-10; 75-36) cruised to an 11-0 laugher over the Lansing Lugnuts (20-22; 56-55) on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.
The Lugnuts have lost six straight games.
The Loons scored three runs in the second inning and six more in the third to knock out Lugnuts starter Ryan Tepera (9-6) and put the game away early. Rafael Ynoa bookended the third inning rally with a leadoff home run and a two-run single.
Brian Cavazos-Galvez added a fourth inning homer and a sixth inning RBI fielder's choice off former college teammate Scott Gracey to close out the scoring.
But the headlines were stolen by Wilborn (2-0), who tied Victor Garate's single-game strikeout record for the Loons (also set against Lansing) with a masterful performance.
The left-hander allowed only a walk to Balbino Fuenmayor, a pair of Kevin Ahrens singles, and a Justin Jackson single in shutting down the Lugnuts offense. Wilborn struck out the side in the second inning; notched a pair of strikeouts in the first, fourth, and sixth innings; and picked up just one strikeout in the third, fifth, and seventh innings.
Ryan Schimpf and Brad Glenn fared the worst, striking out in all three of their at-bats. Jake Marisnick went 0-for-4, striking out twice against Wilborn before whiffing in the ninth against reliever Andy Suiter to end the game.
The Lugnuts look to snap their losing streak at 7:05 p.m. on Monday at Dow Diamond, Lansing right-hander Ryan Shopshire (7-9, 5.10) opposing Loons left-hander Ryan Christenson (1-0, 4.38).
Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
