Loons deal Lugnuts seventh straight loss, 5-3

MIDLAND, Mich. – Bryant Hernandez broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run fourth inning double and the Great Lakes Loons (33-10; 76-36) sent the Lansing Lugnuts (20-23; 56-56) to a season-high seventh straight loss with a 5-3 decision on Monday evening at Dow Diamond.

The Lugnuts fell to .500 overall for the first time since April 21st.

Kevin Ahrens' two-run triple had given Lansing a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning. Balbino Fuenmayor followed with an RBI double, part of a 3-for-4, two-double game for the first baseman.

But Great Lakes countered the Lugnuts' three-run rally with four runs of its own in the home half of the frame. The Loons tied the score against Ryan Shopshire (7-10) on Brian Cavazos-Galvez's RBI double and J.T. Wise's RBI single.

Three batters later, Hernandez sent a drive into the gap to lift the Loons into the lead for good.

Great Lakes starter Ryan Christenson (2-0) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, to earn the win. J.B. Paxson followed with a pair of scoreless innings, and Steve Ames recorded the final six outs for his eleventh save.

The Lugnuts look to snap their losing streak and avoid the four-game road sweep at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday at Dow Diamond, sending right-hander Matt Fields (3-6, 4.27) against Loons right-hander Josh Wall (7-5, 3.50).
