Lugnuts edge Dragons to complete sweep, 2-1

DAYTON, OH – Dave Sever twirled six solid innings and the Lansing Lugnuts (23-23; 59-56) completed a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory over the Dayton Dragons (10-36; 40-75), on Friday night at Fifth Third Field.

It was the twelfth straight win for the Lugnuts in the season series between the two teams, as well as Dayton's 24th straight home defeat.

The game began painfully for Sever (5-8), struck on the throwing arm by a line drive by Dayton leadoff hitter Justin Reed. The right-hander responded by limiting the Dragons to just two more hits and one third inning run for his fourth straight quality start.

It was also, strangely, the second straight six-inning start for Sever in which the 23-year-old did not record a strikeout.

Lansing trailed 1-0 entering the fifth inning, but took the lead for good on a bases-loaded walk to Brad Glenn and an opposite-field two-out RBI single from Jake Marisnick.

Dayton loading the bases in the eighth against Dan Barnes on a pair of singles and a Kevin Nolan error, but Aaron Loup snuffed out the threat with a strikeout of Didi Gregorius and a flyout from Henry Rodriguez.

Loup pitched around a two-out walk in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.

Dragons starter Tim Crabbe (2-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Eight of the 15 meetings between the Lugs and Dragons have been decided by one run.

The Lugnuts open a six-game, seven-day homestand on Saturday night with right-hander Ryan Shopshire (7-10, 5.25) taking on lefty Josh Spence (1-0, 0.00) and the Fort Wayne TinCaps. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

It will be Lugnuts Charities Night at Cooley Law School Stadium, presented by Dan Henry Distributing, featuring post-game LAFCU fireworks and the Lugnuts Jersey Auction to benefit the Capital Area United Way.

Tickets to all Lugnuts home games are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
