Lollis, TinCaps riddle Lugnuts, 3-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Matt Lollis brought a shutout into the eighth and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (36-20; 72-54) handed the Lansing Lugnuts (26-30; 62-63) a 4-1 defeat on Monday night at Parkview Field.

The Lugnuts have scored only five runs in the first three games of the four-game series, all losses. Lansing has lost five straight games overall.

Jeudy Valdez's two-run double in the third inning staked the TinCaps to an early lead, with Edinson Rincon's fourth inning RBI double and Jason Hagerty's seventh inning RBI single doubling the advantage.

Lollis (4-1) dominated the other half of the slate, limiting the Lugs' offense to just four singles and a walk through the first seven innings. (Shortstop Justin Jackson accounted for the walk and two of the hits.)

In the eighth, however, Michael Crouse drilled a double to left field and Kevin Nolan brought him home with a two-out RBI single. Sean Ochinko reached on an error by third baseman Jedd Gyorko, ending Lollis' night. Brad Glenn worked the count full against reliever Stiven Osuna, but struck out looking to end the threat.

Miles Mikolas pitched around a one-out Kevin Ahrens single in the ninth for his third save in as many days and his 10th save of the year.

Nuts starter Egan Smith (6-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings.

The Lugnuts fell to 5-15 against the TinCaps in the season series, 1-9 in the second half.

Lansing looks to avoid the sweep when they play the finale of their four-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., sending right-hander Dave Sever (5-9, 4.46) against Caps lefty Mike Watt (5-4, 3.33).

The final Lugnuts homestand will begin on Saturday, August 28th, with the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Dayton Dragons. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the game.
