Lugnuts stop Whitecaps, 7-6, pull within one game
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. – Kevin Ahrens went 4-for-4 with a home run, Steve Turnbull struck out three straight Whitecaps in the ninth inning with the potential tying run at second base, and the Lansing Lugnuts (28-30; 64-63) beat West Michigan (29-29; 55-72), 7-6, to creep within a game of the final Eastern Division playoff spot.
The Lugnuts brought a 7-5 lead to the bottom of the ninth. Back-to-back doubles to Hernan Perez and Jamie Johnson shaved the lead to a run, but Turnbull whiffed 2-3-4 hitters Jeff Rowland, Corey Jones, and Wade Gaynor to preserve the win.
Lansing led from the very start of the game thanks to a four-run first inning against Caps starter Trevor Feeney (10-13), keyed by a Perez error and featuring an Ahrens RBI single and a Jon Del Campo two-run double.
Ahrens struck again in the eighth inning, sneaking a first row homer over the glove of Jamie Johnson, to provide the winning margin.
The Lugnuts won despite committing four errors, leading to four unearned runs. Matt Fields (5-7) earned the victory, allowing an earned run on five hits in six innings.
Whitecaps manager Joe DePastino was ejected from the game in the fourth inning for disputing an out call at third base on Avisail Garcia, attempting to tag up on a flyout to left.
Lansing sends right-hander Casey Lawrence (0-1, 10.38) to the mound on Thursday night, a 7:00 p.m. affair at Fifth Third Ballpark against Whitecaps lefty Jared Wesson (7-1, 2.54).
The final Lugnuts homestand will begin on Saturday, August 28th, with the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Dayton Dragons. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the game.
