Lugnuts' Van Kirk named Midwest League Batter of the Week
BELOIT, Wis. – Lansing Lugnuts outfielder Brian Van Kirk has been named the Midwest League's Batter of the Week for the week spanning May 25-31, the league announced today.
In seven games, the 23-year-old Van Kirk batted .480 (12-for-25), including two doubles and two home runs, scoring five runs and picking up 11 RBI. In the process, he raised his batting average from .274 to .313 and helped the Lugnuts win three straight games against Burlington and Quad Cities to match their longest winning streak of the season.
He becomes the second Lugnuts player honored by the Midwest League with a weekly award in 2009, as fellow outfielder Johermyn Chavez was named the MWL Batter of the Week for April 20-26.
In 2008, the Lansing Lugnuts had two batters, Manny Rodriguez and Matt Liuzza, and three pitchers, Kyle Ginley, Nate Starner and Luis Perez, honored as MWL Players of the Week.
Lansing opens a four-game road-trip in Fort Wayne on Tuesday night before returning home for an eight-day homestand beginning on Saturday night against West Michigan. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the 7:05 p.m. game.
