Lugnuts top Spartans in Showdown
Largest crowd in Oldsmobile Park history witnesses close game

LANSING – One year ago, the Lansing Lugnuts and Michigan State Spartans played a compelling one run game that came down to the last at-bat. Round two may have been even better, as the Lansing Lugnuts squeeked out a 4-2 win in the second annual Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance before an Oldsmobile Park record crowd of 12,862 fans.

With the score tied 2-2 in the sixth, Wes Stone was able to deliver a hit into right field for Lansing that ultimately plated Raul Barron from second base, giving the Lugnuts a 3-2 lead. Stone would later score on a wild pitch for the final margin.

Lansing had held a 1-0 lead in the third when the Spartans rallied to take to take control of the game. A.J. Shindler was hit by a pitch and scored when Steve Gerstenberger pounded a double off of the center field wall to tie the game at 1-1. Gerstenberger later came home on an Andy Johnson single to right that gave the Spartans a 2-1 advantage.

The Lugnuts immediately tied the game back up in the bottom of the frame when Moises Sierra blasted a solo homer past the right field wall to make it 2-2.

In all, the Spartans used 19 position players and seven hurlers in the contest, while the Lugnuts used five pitchers.

The game also marks the second straight year that the Spartans have outhit Lansing, but lost the game. Michigan State had four knocks compared to the Lugnuts three.

The game also broke the Oldsmobile Park attendance record, which has stood since 2001. The previous high was 12,685.

Lansing (12-7) will return to Midwest League action on Friday night in Clinton, Iowa to take on the Clinton LumberKings. First pitch is set for 8:00 p.m.
