Clinton, Iowa – The Clinton LumberKings rallied for two-runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take a 2-1 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts at Alliant Energy Field Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of the three-game set.
Lansing held a 1-0 lead heading into the ninth, but Cristian Santana was able to draw a one-out walk from Lugnut reliever Alan Farina. Mitch Moreland then singled to put runners at the corners for the LumberKings.
Ross Buckwalter was then summoned in from the Lugnuts bullpen, where he immediately surrendered a single to Jonathan Greene that scored Santana which tied the game at 1-1. Buckwalter retired Carlos Dominguez for the second out of the inning, but Carlos Dominguez ended the game with a walk-off single to right-center field that plated Moreland for the Clinton triumph.
The LumberKings had been held silent until that point by Lansing starting pitcher Nate Starner. He twirled seven innings and gave up just four hits while fanning seven batters. Starner was able to keep Clinton off of the scoreboard and left the game with a 1-0 lead.
Lansing's lone run of the game came in the third inning when Kevin Ahrens and Darin Mastroianni had consecutive two-out doubles that made it a 1-0 game. Those doubles accounted for two of Lansing's three hits in the contest.
Adalberto Flores (2-0) got the win for the LumberKings in relief as he retired all six batters that he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.
Farina (1-1) shouldered the loss for the Lugnuts after surrendering the two ninth inning runs.
Lansing (13-9) will continue the road trip on Monday evening when they take on the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. Brad Mills (1-1, 3.66) will take the mound for the Lugnuts, while Eduardo Sanchez (1-0, 0.00) will get the call for the River Bandits. First pitch is set for 8:00 p.m.
