| The Chicago
Cubs added five players to their 40-man roster on Thursday, all five of
which played for the Lugnuts at some time.
Infielders Ronny Cedeno(2001-02), Jason Dubois(2001) and Brendan Harris(2001) were added along with pitchers Renyel Pinto(2001-02) and Carlos Vasquez(2003). With the addition of these five players, 19 former Lugnuts are now listed on the team's 40-man roster. Cedeno spent the season at Daytona (A), where he hit .211 with four homers and 36 RBI and a career-high 19 stolen bases. With the Lugnuts, Cedeno hit .211 in 115 games during the 2000-01 seasons. Dubois set the Lansing franchise record for homers in a season with 24 in 2001. In 2003, he hit .269 with 15 homers and 73 at West Tennessee (AA). He was named to the midseason Southern League all-star team and was also named the 2003 Arizona Fall League MVP. Harris also played with Dubois in the 2003 Arizona Fall League and hit .280 for West Tennessee (AA) in 120 games. In 2001, Harris hit .274 with four homers in 32 games for the Lugnuts. Pinto pitched for Lansing during both the 2001 and 2002 campaigns, going 7-5 in 2002 in helping the Lugnuts reach the Midwest League Championship Series. For Daytona in 2003, Pinto posted a 3-8 record, but held opponents to a .221 average while collecting a 3.22 ERA. Vasquez rounds out the selections. The 20-year-old lefty went 10-13 with a 3.74 ERA for the Lugnuts in 2003, helping the team capture its second Midwest League Championship. With the additions to the Cubs' roster, 29 former players are now listed on major league 40-man rosters. Minor league players who have been out of high school for four years or out of college for three years not placed on a 40-man roster are eligible to be selected in next month's Rule V Draft. |
