LANSING - There will be a new man at the helm of the Lansing Lugnuts when the team takes the field for the 2007 season, according to the Toronto Blue Jays' announcement of minor league coaching staffs today.
Gary Cathcart will take over the role as manager, making it his first season in Lansing. He will be joined by two members of last year's coaching staff, hitting coach Charles Poe and pitching coach Tom Signore. Bob Tarpey will assume the role of trainer for the 2007 campaign.
For Cathcart, 44, it will be the second managerial appointment of his career. He led the Pulaski Blue Jays (Rookie - Appalachian League) to a 40-27 record in 2004 and served as a coach for New Hampshire (AA - Eastern League) for the last two seasons. Cathcart played collegiate baseball at Middle Tennessee State University where he hit over .350 in two seasons with the Blue Raiders. After finishing his college career, Cathcart played four seasons with the New York Yankees organization from 1984-1987. He now resides in Bedford, New Hampshire.
Charles Poe returns for his third consecutive season as the hitting coach for the Lugnuts. Under his watch, the Lugnuts have hit .255 over two seasons and led the Midwest League in home runs last year with 98. This will be Poe's fifth year coaching at the Blue Jays' Class "A" affiliate. Poe, 35, was a sixth round selection by the Chicago White Sox in 1990 and played for 13 seasons before retiring in 2002. He now makes his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Tom Signore, 44, will begin his second season as the pitching coach for the Lugnuts. Signore's 2006 pitching staff posted a 3.44 ERA, good for third in the Midwest League. At the end of the 2006 season, Signore was selected to coach in the prestigious Arizona Fall League where he helped coach the Phoenix Desert Dogs to the league title.
"The overall play in the AFL was high every day and I thought the Blue Jays were represented well," Signore said of his time in Arizona. "It just seemed as if everything fell into place for us. While that was a great experience, I am now very excited to be coming back to Oldsmobile Park. We receive great support from our fans in Lansing and it is a terrific place to play."
Before coming to the Blue Jays organization, Signore coached with the Florida Marlins and Montreal Expos. The Quinnipiac College Hall of Famer makes his home in Syracuse, New York with his wife and daughter.
Bob Tarpey will make his Midwest League debut as the Lugnuts athletic trainer in 2007. He is replacing Chris Vernon and Andrew Muccino, who split time last season as the team's athletic trainer.
